Sisters and associates celebrated the 2016 harvest at the 6th Annual Potato Bake on Friday, September 23. Attendees brought potato toppings to share, adding to the variety of potato options. Yum!
Srs. Helene and Mary Lou, along with the Land Use Committee, held a special garden luncheon for Earth Echoes volunteers, thanking them for all the work they did (weeding, planting, cleaning up, etc.) on the grounds all year!
A big thank you to the students from Cardinal Stritch, as they helped with cleaning up and pruning in the grape arbor, washing and putting away flower pots and planting trays, and moving dirt indoors for use for starter plants for next season.
Jessi Senda from our General Office (center back) entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi to win 93.3 FM radio’s Wednesday Workforce Lunch. On the form she stated that we deserved a catered lunch because of the work we do, how we take care of the retired sisters, etc. On September 14, 93.3 FM delivered a lunch for 20 employees, which was catered by Bunzel’s Old Fashioned Meat Market and Catering. Thanks to 93.3 and way to go Jessi!
Pastor Lisa and a group from Redeemer Lutheran church joined the Land Use Commitee at the Motherhouse to see what the land use committee is doing in the garden, wetlands, urban forest, and with the bees.
They also shared information about the environmental work they are doing over a pot luck dinner, including vegetables cooked on the rocket stove.
The Sisters and Land Use Committee have harvested 870 tomatoes so far -- they go to both the Motherhouse and Clare Hall kitchens for fresh use. They have made tomato juice, also put some in the freezer for juice and sauce for later on, as well as sent tomatoes to St. Ann's and the Courts.
At the present they are harvesting green beans, tomatoes, summer squash, cucumbers, cabbage, beets, and potatoes, and peppers. Harvested about 170 of beans and 250 of Yukon Gold potatoes and 100 of sweet corn-- still have to harvest Kennebec and Pontiac Potatoes. |
