Praying, Living, & Loving the Franciscan Way
August 13, 1015 St. Francis of Assisi parish was the site of the evening Mass at which 600 people gathered from all over the Milwaukee Archdiocese. Father Michael Bertram, Capuchin termed the evening one of a “celebration of power, the power of faith in Jesus Christ. Archbishop Listecki continued the theme telling the people they were light and salt for the world and empowered to do good…”Our mission is for peace!” Mr. James T. Henry was recognized as the persistent person who invited the Archbishop to come and be a presence in the black community. Two car loads of Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi were present. One group stayed to walk the 5 blocks with lighted candles to the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial statue where the neighborhood was blessed. The beautiful, warm summer evening and the wonderful combined choirs add to the memory of this special event. We invite you, our readers, to join us in continued prayer for peace and safety in our cities.

Playground Progress: St. Ann's Intergenerational Bucyrus Campus - North Side, Milwaukee, WI8/25/2015 The new St. Ann’s at 24th and North Avenue will have its GRAND OPENING: Sept. 15, from 10am onward with speeches and dignitaries visiting. Plan to spend the day-or part of it, touring, meeting people and celebrating this imaginative place of service and Franciscan care. It will include day care of people of all ages and abilities; a center for those with dementia; clinics: both medical and dental; after school programs; art and music therapies; playgrounds; fruit trees; a bandshell; respite care ; swimming lessons and more. The pictures here show the progress of the moment. A crew of both volunteers and hired workers are putting the playgrounds in order. Unexpected rain caused a setback for a day but concrete is being poured today. Mud is deep but drying. Wood chips will cover the surface for protection. A quick walk through the building gave us just a peek of the brilliant central skylight over the park and the African themed designs by professional artists. Beauty and care will heal both body and spirit as community is built in the Franciscan and African American traditions together! All are welcome! See www.stanncenter.org Aug. 9, 2015
Sisters Adele, Barbara, Rita and Margaret joined Associates Eileen and Pat at the 2nd Annual Milwaukee Water Commons events held at 6:30pm to 9pm, Aug. 9 at Bradford Beach. The theme was: honoring the Great Lakes, invoking ancestors, and the Great Spirit to help us all to care for the waters. Groups leading us in song, prayer, story and dance were: The Strawberry Moon Singers, illumination by the Overpass Light Brigade, inspiring words from local community and spiritual leaders, percussion by One Drop and Jahmes Finlayson +Friends and acapella singing based on the stories and experiences of the audience by vocal improve group Blessing Next to the Wound. Thoughtful, contemplative, joyous, and moving are some of the descriptions of the evening. The improv group was especially welcome as it put some of our water stories into sung, artful harmony. Themes ranged from the waters of birth, to the waters of struggle and forgiveness, to the waters of nature, the sparkle of dew and the surging passion to save the beauty of nature for those of the future. At the entrance an ELF (Electric Light and Fun) car was on display. See the web site: Organictransit.com. The Milwaukee Interfaith site also has details on the vehicle. It uses very low energy; is both battery and solar powered; rides like a big bicycle; has head and stop lights; fits in the bicycle lane and goes up to 20 mph. It weighs about 130 pounds. Four of the sisters of St. Francis of Assisi celebrated 50 years of Consecrated Life IN LATE July, 2015. They were among 14 sisters celebrating milestones, all the way up to 80 years!
The four were Sisters Rose, Adele, Rita and Julianne. Prior to their week of celebrations the sisters took time for prayer and retreat on Eagle Lake near Burlington, WI. Their key reflection question was: ”What did it all mean: service, prayer and Franciscan community life for 50 years?” In conversations, quiet and shared prayer they reflected together on their lives of ministry and got reacquainted after years apart. Nature is healing and they enjoyed it all. The sunrise was spectacular. Some of them used the old canoe for wonderful rides along the lake shore and into the lily pads near the swamp to the south. “O Great Spirit! Earth, sun, sky and sea! You are within and all around me!” This old refrain came to mind as they paddled across the glassy lake with the blue heavens reflecting in the mirror- like water. On Sunday, July 26, 23 Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi celebrated their anniversaries of religious profession at a Jubilarian Mass at 3 p.m. at Mater Christi Chapel at the Cousins Center in St. Francis, Wis.
