Praying, Living, & Loving the Franciscan Way
The leadership of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi announced this week that the 1894 chapel on the Motherhouse grounds, designed by Milwaukee architect Erhard Brielmaier, will be deconstructed. In making the announcement, Sr. Diana De Bruin, director of the congregation, stated that it is not financially feasible for the congregation to continue its maintenance and to add the entrance necessitated by the deconstruction of the attached Motherhouse. The process of deconstruction will begin with salvaging the numerous artifacts that are part of the structure, which underwent renovations in 1921, 1956-57, and 1966. Sister De Bruin said the treasures are too numerous to list, but notable items include the stained glass windows, which were created in Austria, installed in 1898, and re-leaded and repaired in the 1990s, as well as two richly decorated reliquaries that enshrine the relics of some 200 saints. The plan also includes the salvage of thousands of Milwaukee’s prized Cream City bricks. At this time there is no set date for the deconstruction to begin.

10 German Pilgrims from Augsburg and Ettenbeuren visited us from August 21 to September 2. Fr. Manfred Krumm organized the group, spending time in prayer, visiting not only our corporate ministries and religious landmarks, but also enjoying the city of Milwaukee and surrounding areas. We are very grateful for the time they spent with us!

We have had the pleasure of working with Sr. Durstyne Farnan, OP, for the last few years. A School Sister of St. Francis, Sr. Dusty has spent the last few years working with the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi on many projects, most pertaining to Justice, Peace, Integrity, & Creation. Many Blessings to Sr. Dusty as she embarks on a new chapter of her life of service! "I’m going to be the Dominican UN NGO Representative in New York. It is a three year term renewable. The Dominicans have ECOSOC status which gives them voice but not vote at the UN on certain documents that are being worked on - Women and Girls, Migration, and Climate Change. I will be the third UN representative that the Dominicans have had since they became an NGO at the UN. It is an honor and a privilege to serve the Dominican Family in the U.S. in this way. My predecessor, Sr. Margaret Mayce, OP an Amityville Dominican began reaching out in these past few years to the Dominican Sisters International to bring one Dominican Woman from each continent to participate in the Commission on the Status of Women. It has been a big success and this is one of the duties I will follow up on at the UN." These chairs and many more will be sold at the Sister of St. Francis of Assisi Rummage Sale! See flyer/ event page for more information!
