Praying, Living, & Loving the Franciscan Way
MAY 28, 1849 FOUNDATION DAY of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, Milwaukee, WI By Sister Adele Thibaudeau, OSF Today’s special liturgy reminded us of the great women who came to an unknown country to follow Christ and be of service 166 years ago today. Writer Judy Bridges of Redbird Studios put it this way after reading the 2007 edition of our history by Sister Doris Pehowski, OSF: BY GOD’S PROVIDENCE: “ Read this book in a park. Let the tall trees remind you what it was like in 1849, when a small group of Third Order Franciscans, men and women, arrived from Bavaria and bought a strip of Lake Michigan shoreline just south of Milwaukee, WI. Nothing about life here was easy, yet the community split logs, hauled stone, tilled fields and erected buildings after building until this became the Motherhouse for a congregation that reached around the world…we learn lessons from this community of women who worked so hard and cared so deeply.”
