Praying, Living, & Loving the Franciscan Way
The leadership of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi announced this week that the 1894 chapel on the Motherhouse grounds, designed by Milwaukee architect Erhard Brielmaier, will be deconstructed. In making the announcement, Sr. Diana De Bruin, director of the congregation, stated that it is not financially feasible for the congregation to continue its maintenance and to add the entrance necessitated by the deconstruction of the attached Motherhouse. The process of deconstruction will begin with salvaging the numerous artifacts that are part of the structure, which underwent renovations in 1921, 1956-57, and 1966. Sister De Bruin said the treasures are too numerous to list, but notable items include the stained glass windows, which were created in Austria, installed in 1898, and re-leaded and repaired in the 1990s, as well as two richly decorated reliquaries that enshrine the relics of some 200 saints. The plan also includes the salvage of thousands of Milwaukee’s prized Cream City bricks. At this time there is no set date for the deconstruction to begin.
